Regular School Board Meeting

Tuesday, June 23, 2026 5:00 PM

The meeting was called to order by chairperson Ryan Riester. Roll was called with all Board members present along with Superintendent Jaszczak and several school administrative staff.

The school district vision statement was read and the Pledge of Allegiance was given. The meeting agenda was approved.

Public comment was given by one community member concerning School Board attendance at the Red Wing Pride Festival the previous Saturday, changes to the Board’s public comment policies,

concerns about a busing situation, and a situation concerning a substitute teacher. (The community member spoke very quickly in order to make all their comments in the allotted time and was very

difficult to hear clearly.) The Board thanked the community for their comments.

The Board recognized a student who had competed in the state golf tournament. Staff retirees were acknowledged. The Young People’s Theater Intensive will present a play this Friday.

Administrative report: The current principal at Sunnyside is moving to Burnside the next school year. The principal position at Sunnyside will be filled with an interim with the position open for candidates in the future. There are 4 or 5 special education positions open at this time, plus the assistant high school principal

position.

Kids Junction is currently operating at TBMS. There are many activities offered through Community Education. Renovation is currently being done at Tower View.

New staff have been hired for the school nurse position and nutrition services.

The City Council changed the zoning for the Jefferson school property making the Port Authority more optimistic about possible uses of the property. The members of the school board passed a resolution to extend the purchase agreement deadline with the city.

The board approved the EDIAM resolution to give the Superintendent access to the secure websites.

(EDIAM = Education Identity and Access Management security system.)

The board approved a motion to fulfill Red Wing’s portion of the Goodhue County Ed. District Long-Term Maintenance Plan. Red Wing’s portion is 38% of the $200,000 amount.

Finance Director Chris Mulvich, presented the preliminary budget for 2027. There has been a decline in student enrollment of 16% over the last five years. That decline, plus reduced federal aid and

compensatory aid from the state have caused a structural deficit in the budget. The Board moved to approve the preliminary budget for 2027.

(As a side-note: Budget information was displayed on a large screen tv but was still much too small to be read by observers. Mr. Mulvich covered a lot of information and statistics in a short period, and it was hard to follow and understand. Many terms and acronyms were used as well, with no explanation of what they mean. It makes it very difficult for observers or online viewers to understand what was being presented and discussed.)

The next business meeting is July 21st.

The Board went into closed session for the mid-year evaluation of Superintendent Jaszcak.
